Humour gaulois, perfide Albion et Nouveau Monde : les grandes traversées d'Astérix

In this paper I study the five Asterix albums translated in British English by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge and then later in American English by Robert Stephen Cohen. The enormous success Asterix had in France and Europe as well as the failure of the British English translation on the American market led the French publisher to go for a new American translation, an adventure that was brought to an end after five albums which met with the same lack of understanding on the other side of the Atlantic. In addition to the importance of the cultural dimension the translation exposes, it shows how remarkably adaptable humour, wordplay and various allusions are since they stand transformation. The albums, magnificently translated first by Bell and Hockridge, are quite good in American English too though the conditions for the production of the translation are surely too severe. Cohen is forced to go too far and produce a plethora of new instances of wordplay and allusions that partially transform the tone of the adventures of the small Gaulish warrior. Any translation, including that of humour, needs to go beyond the original much more than it needs to stay behind, but it should also respect its specificity and limits.
Nous nous proposons d'explorer les cinq albums de la série Astérix traduits en anglais britannique par Anthea Bell et Derek Hockridge et plus tard en anglais américain par Robert Stephen Cohen. L'immense succès rencontré par Astérix en France et en Europe et l'échec de la commercialisation de la traduction anglaise aux Etats-Unis ont conduit les éditeurs français à tenter l'aventure d'une traduction américaine, aventure limitée à cinq albums qui ont rencontré la même incompréhension outre-Atlantique. Outre l'importance de la dimension culturelle qu'elle souligne, cette retraduction nous montre la remarquable plasticité de l'humour, jeux de mots et allusions diverses se prêtant sans mal à l'adaptation. Magnifiquement traduits par Anthea Bell et Derek Hockridge, les albums se révèlent de très bonne facture en anglais américain, mais, poussé par un cahier des charges sans doute agressif, Robert Stephen Cohen se voit obligé d'en faire trop, de multiplier les créations et les allusions, au point de dénaturer quelque peu l'univers du petit Gaulois. Si toute traduction, y compris de l'humour, est un dépassement nécessaire de l'original (bien plus d'ailleurs qu'un en-deçà), elle se doit d'en respecter aussi les particularités et les limites.
