Hildegard of Bingen's naturalistic work consists today of two different texts, on one hand Liber subtilitatum diversarum naturarum creaturarum alias Physica, and on the other hand Cause and cure. In these two treatises, the semantic field of the venenum forms a kind of red thread: not only Hildegarde gives a big importance to the notion of venenum in her Weltanschauung, but she also shows a big familiarity with the multiform reality of poisons of her time, and such a knowledge can be explained by readings as well as by experience : as a matter of fact, the monastic spheres of the XIIth century were not totally shielded from the temptation of poison. This paper examines here alternately the theoretical part played by the venenum in the abbess' conception of the world, and then the place which poison occupies in the medical practice recommended by her two medical treatises.
