Among Raphael's many paintings of the Madonna, there is only one, the Sixtine Madonna, which gives iconographic expression to the relation between the Virgin Mary, the Temple veil and the Ark of the Convenant. This relation has been amply explored by art historians, but they have failed to pay attention to the other veil in the painting, that worn by the Virgin Mary. This article explores its relation to the Temple veil while analyzing its place in Christian tradition, doctrine and iconography.
