Ergative and Pre-ergative Patterns in Indo-Aryan as Predications of Localization.

The paper aims at linking the historic evolution of the past and perfect system in Indo-Aryan (with special reference to Hindi/Urdu) to an interpretation of the ergative pattern as a stative predication of localization. It is generally considered that the ergativity pattern is a typologically atypical feature among the family of Indo-European languages, a feature specific to the Western group of Indo-Aryan dialects, and that split ergativity is linked with transitivity and volition. The study first shows that such an evolution has been central to the Romance languages too and that non ergative Indo-Aryan languages have not altogether ignored the structure but at a certain point went further along the same historical logic as have Roman languages. It will then propose an analysis of the structure as a predication of localization similar to other stative predications (mainly with “dative” subjects) in Indo-Aryan, supporting this claim by a tentative inquiry into the marker for “ergative” case in Hindi/Urdu. The mirative meanings of the simple past form, and the semantic features of the role Agent in Hindi/Urdu are also mentioned as elements for the description of the IA ergative pattern.
L'étude vise à corréler l'évolution historique des systèmes passé et futur en indo-aryen (particulièrement hindi/ourdou) à l'interprétation de l'alignement ergatif en tant que prédication de localisation. Il est généralement admis que la structure ergative est un trait typologiquement atypique dans la famille indo-européenne, trait spécifique au sous-groupe nord-ouest de l'indo-aryen, et que l'ergativité est liée à la transitivité et à la volition. L'article montre d'abord qu'une telle évolution a été centrale dans les langues romanes aussi et que l'indo-aryen oriental n'a pas entièrement ignoré la structure mais a à un moment donné évolué plus avant dans la même logique que les langues romanes. Une analyse de la structure est ensuite proposée en tant que prédication de localisation analogue aux autres prédications statives en indo-aryen ('sujets au datif'), argumentée par l'étude de l'origine du marqueur ne en hindi/ourdou, ainsi que par l'analyse des valeurs miratives liées à la forme simple (passé accompli /aoriste) qui déclenche l'alignement ergatif quand le verbe est transitif, ainsi que par celle du rôle agent.
