The act of writing on walls is highlighted in the present research as a spatial practice. Its reading in the urban landscape, through the different forms of signatures and their distributions, shows an underlying strategy in the practice of graffiti writers, trying to find an optimal visibility while dealing with several risks such as police arrest or systematic cleaning of walls. This spatial analysis of the phenomenon tends to show that graffiti, in France, is not the expression of a territorial claiming, but more a self promotion of the graffiti writer in an advertising manner. This paper focuses on the example of the city of Caen. An exhaustive inventory of wall markings has been carried out in four areas, as well as interviews with the main protagonists of the graffiti movement.

La pratique du tag est envisagée ici dans une perspective géographique. La lecture des différentes formes de marquages et de leurs répartitions démontre une stratégie dans la pratique des tagueurs, cherchant l'exposition optimale tout en composant avec le risque policier et l'effacement régulier des murs. Cette lecture spatiale est aussi l'occasion de démontrer qu'en France le tag n'est pas une marque de territorialisation, mais qu'il est véritablement associé à des stratégies publicitaires auto-promotionnelles.
