Éditer Flaubert : du papier à l'écran - Parcours entre textes et avant-textes / Editing Flaubert: From Paper to Screen. Among Texts and Avant-textes.

Résumé

At the beginning of the 1990s, Flaubert, a writer known and canonized for his ceaseless search for formal perfection, seemed to fit perfectly into the hieratic mould of the publishing industry. At that time, the project undertaken to establish a new definitive edition of his Complete Works in the prestigious « Pléiade series » is the most obvious illustration of the publishing order: the edition is intended - more or less explicitly - to become the ultimate reference, giving the definitive version of the texts. By historical coincidence, it was also at that time that the development of editions of Flaubert's genetic dossiers quickened as hypertextual tools were disseminated and standardized. Prior to this, their development had been technically slowed for lack of an appropriate medium: an example is the strictly genetic part of my doctoral thesis, which I defended in 1998. Although my goal was to show the « dynamism » of Flaubertian writing, I was forced to flatten the model I obtained to make it appear on the two-dimensional space of a book page. Even if I would not have had to present an academic work, there were no tools which would have allowed me to work in any other way. During the 1990s, some fragmentary experiments with reduced audience were indeed attempted, but their primary interest was in testing these new technologies. Today, several large-scale realizations underscore the intimate correlation and the henceforth inseparable character of avant-textual and hypertextual fields. Besides, this conjunction has the unexpected consequence that it weakens the intangible character that printed publishing tends to confer to texts. If the undisputed reign of « the last authorized publication » could sometimes be shaken, the reader might be better served : Flaubert was a very mediocre proofreader and, at times, he even misread his own writing. If achieving an hypertextual edition is already a great necessity for handwritten and / or unfinished works, first of all Bouvard and Pécuchet, it would be far from being superfluous for published texts such as Madame Bovary or A Sentimental Education. This paper will discuss several editorial projects, both in print and in digital format, concerning Flaubert.
