Formal network methods in history: why and how?

This paper discusses the application of the kind of formal network methods more commonly used in sociology to historical materials and especially to rural history. It addresses specifically historical questions related to sources and to the dynamics of network as well as more general questions about the underlying theories of social network analysis.

L'article discute des possibilités d'application des analyses formelles de réseaux sociaux, plus présentes jusqu'ici en sociologie, à des terrains historiques et particulièrement d'histoire rurale. Il traite de questions propres aux recherches historiques, en lien avec les sources et le traitement du temps, ainsi que de problèmes plus généraux, notamment des théories implicites ou explicites liées à l'analyse de réseaux.
