The Sociology of Globalization. Theoretical and Methodological Reflections

Whereas the word globalization is widely used, its sociological sense needs to be clarified. This article aims to achieve just that, all the while revisiting for us that sociology is the discipline keeping tabs with the changes of the world-society. Two typical subjects for sociology of globalization can be distinguished: on the one hand, the realities that are “global” at first sight; on the other hand, the identification of similar changes in (almost) all countries. However, can the national-born concepts created thus far account for these subjects? This is debated by considering the sociology of social movements' (interpretation of A. Touraine) and the sociology of the elite's (interpretation of R. Aron and G. Rocher) explaining power to study the alterglobalist movements. It thus seems that, in order to understand world metamorphosis, the urgency lays in making available sufficiently accurate and reliable data, matching universally recognized definitions; this primarily reflects the clarification of the specific factors of social sciences
