THE CONCEPTION OF WORK AND LABOR IN CONTEMPORARY NAHUATL-SPEAKING
COMMUNITIES IN THE SIERRA DE PUEBLA

This paper describes the representations of work and labor (tequitl, tekitl) and the corresponding concepts among the Nahua Indians of Mexico. It is based on the Nahuatl lexicon and ethnographic observations on practices and discourses. The Indians consider that each entity in the World have to do a work or office. The tequitl, or tekitl, means any difficult task, the activities of the material production, but also the social roles, the gender roles, the office of government, the chamanism, the Gods' activities.

Cette communication décrit les représentations du travail (tequitl, tekitl) et les concepts afférents chez les Indiens nahuas du Mexique, à partir du lexique de la langue nahuatl et d'observations ethnographiques de pratiques et de discours. Les Indiens considèrent que chaque entité du monde a un 'travail' ou fonction à remplir. Le tequitl, ou tekitl, désigne une action difficile, les activités productives, mais aussi les rôles sociaux de genre, la fonction de gouvernement, celle du chaman, les activités des dieux.
