Heinrich Mann's novel Der Untertan has sparked many reactions and numerous discussions. While viewed as heinous aestheticism by some and as the herbarium of the German man by others, the novel has been the focus of considerations on authority as applied to German history and on the influence of Lutheranism on the behaviour of the citizen (Untertanenmentalität) in a world fanaticised by power and where reason is now seen only as weakness. Beyond the actual nature of the author's undertaking, we intend to study the means that he uses (especially in the way he draws his main character) in order to achieve his political and aesthetic goal. Mann's often ironic style brings in a certain distance, which can become a hindrance: is his intention to have a pamphlet? How are we to reasonably interpret the novel and more particularly the character of the subject? Is Heßling simply a puppet whose strings are pulled by the narrator, does he have his own identity or is he just one possible type of subject? Is this story about a “delicate child” just an example or is it an exemplum? This work is written in a fairly traditional way. The novelty lies more in the “emptiness” of the character and in the way the author shakes any notion of a permanent identity, resulting in a space that allows the reader in, while still offering a solid foundation (the daily life of the character in all its detail). Diederich no longer has the appeal of Stendhal's spineless heroes, and perhaps also no longer has the excuse of genetics that Zola's heroes have. He does not yet have the status of heroes set apart from the world like some of Steinbeck's characters or Camus' outsider, for example. But we can see that a literary figure has indeed been born, making the link between historicity and, not prophecy, but modernity.
