This article concerns the role of cultural patterns in the interpretation of objects and the treatment of matter. Il is a commentary on the results of a research project during wiyk Parisian students were asked to examine and interpret Mexican Indian blouses . The article underlines the differences between indigenous interpretations and those of Parisian women, differences which can lead ti deep misunderstandings. Through several examples the workings of cultural patterns can be observed and how their functioning changes sometimes during use. A final question is posed as to the possibility of “objective” observation of materials objects.

Cet article traite du rôle des schèmes culturels dans l'interprétation des objets et dans la manipulation de la matière. Il commente les résultats d'une enquête au cours de laquelle on a fait examiner et interpréter des blouses indiennes du Mexique par des étudiantes parisiennes. Il souligne les décalages qui peuvent aboutir à de profonds malentendus. A travers plusieurs exemples, on peut observer comment les schèmes culturels agissent, et comment ils se modifient parfois en cours d'action. On s'interroge en conclusion sur la possibilité d'une observation « objective » des choses matérielles.
