Antiochian authors of Late Antiquity do not address the question of private dwelling spaces; moreover their religious orientation and their faithfulness to rhetorical norms determine whatever information they might furnish. Libanius, the principal representative of the last stages of paganism, thus remains profoundly indebted to Classical thought, which subordinates the domestic sphere to public life, and conceives of the private home only in its relation to the city. The Christians preachers John Chrysostom and Severus of Antioch, for their part, adopt a contrary position, yet their intimate portrayal of the family household is more expressive of an ideal of life inspired by Monasticism than of a social reality. However, these ideological conceptions integrate material indices, whose documentary interest appears in less standarized texts such as correspondance (Libanius) or hagiography (Theodoret, " Life of St. Symeon Stylites the Younger "). These authors thus contribute indirectly to our knowledge of antiochian dwellings, and the information they provide can be corroborated with precision by data from the field.
