Celiac Disease and Eucharistic Communion

This article aimed to help prevent celiac-sufferers from being excluded from Eucharistic communion. In the Roman Catholic Church gluten-free hosts are not authorised whereas those that contain enough gluten to obtain the confection of bread without adding any other materials are. This position has been confirmed on July 24th 2003 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Since even the slightest trace of gluten can have a negative affect, preference should be given to communion under the form of wine alone.

L'article traite des normes de droit canonique concernant l'accès à la communion eucharistique pour les malades coeliaques. Tout en rappelant que les hosties totalement privées de gluten demeurent matière invalide pour la célébration de l'Eucharistie dans l'Eglise catholique, il plaide pour que l'accès à la communion sous la seule espèce du vin soit facilité.
