Pobreza y riqueza en los libros de emblemas españoles

Among the polemics that stirred the spirits of the Modern Age, one that stands out is the dispute on the poor. It is well known that there were two opposite visions of the problem of poverty. On the one hand we have the view that perpetuated the medieval vision of the poor person; on the other hand there were those who understood that they were facing a social problem.
The aim of our work is to explore how the topic of poverty is dealt with in Spanish emblem books. We will analyze the representations of the poor person, of poverty itself, of wealth and of greed, with which it is always associated. We will determine the extent of the relationship that exists between the treatment of the topic in the emblem books and the intellectual polemics of the moment.

Entre las polémicas que agitaron los espíritus de la Edad Moderna destaca la disputa sobre los pobres. Sabido es que hubo dos visiones contrapuestas del problema de la mendicidad. Por un lado la que perpetuaba la visión medieval del pobre, por otro los que comprendían que se enfrentaban a un problema social.
El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es explorar cómo se trata el tema de la pobreza en los libros de emblemas españoles. Analizaremos las representaciones del pobre, de la pobreza, de la riqueza y de la avaricia a la que siempre se la asocia. Determinaremos el grado de relación que existe entre el tratamiento del tema en los libros de emblemas y la polémica intelectual del momento.
