The "combatant population" (former combatants, war disabled and families of fallen soldiers) plays an important role in post-war Bosnian society. The emergence of the combatant population as a distinct social group can be explained by its specific experience of violence, its legal and symbolical status and its participation to various associations. At the end of the 1990s, the decline in the material well-being of the combatant population and its loss of prestige have led to a serious identity crisis and to important street protests against the reform of the military pension system.

La "population combattante" (anciens combattants, invalides de guerre et familles de combattants morts) occupe une place importante dans la société bosnienne d'après-guerre. L'émergence de la population combattante comme groupe social distinct s'explique par son expérience spécifique de la violence, son statut légal et symbolique et sa participation à diverses associations. A la fin des années 1990, la dégradation de la situation matérielle de la population combattante et sa perte de prestige ont suscité une sérieuse crise d'identité et d'importantes manifestations contre la réforme du système de pensions militaires.
