The "cobweb theorem" or "cobweb diagram" is one of the first mathematical formalization that deals with the stability of the market process (Ezekiel [1938]). Moore gave intuitively its first formulation (Stigler [1962]), but its mathematical formalization was independently done by Ricci [1930], Schultz [1930] and Tinbergen [1930]. First, the paper shows how the idea of the cobweb mechanism appears in Moore's work in order to solve a
statistical problem, namely the statistical estimation of supply and demand curves.
"Inadvertently" (Samuelson [1947]) Moore sets out the cobweb idea which mathematical formalization was given by Ricci, Schultz and Tinbergen. Second, this paper is an attempt to trace the links between Moore's work and its followers. It shows that the meaning of the cobweb diagram was different in the authors' thought. It also stresses the role of the mathematics in the investigation process of economic phenomena.

Le diagramme du cobweb est considéré comme l'une des premières formalisations mathématiques permettant de poser le problème de la stabilité d'un processus marchand (Ezekiel [1938]). Moore fut le premier à avoir l'intuition d'un tel diagramme (Stigler [1962]) même s'il faut attendre la publication simultanée des articles de Ricci [1930], Schultz [1930] et Tinbergen [1930] pour qu'elle soit formalisée. Cet article montre en premier lieu que cette intuition surgit alors que Moore cherche à résoudre un problème statistique lié à l'estimation des courbes d'offre et de demande. Cette intuition, formulée par "inadvertance" (Samuelson [1947]), fut reprise et formalisée indépendamment par Ricci, Schultz et Tinbergen. L'article retrace alors, en second lieu, les liens unissant ces travaux à ceux de Moore, tout en montrant les enjeux dont le diagramme du cobweb était porteur pour ces auteurs. Ce faisant, il permet de mettre en lumière le rôle des mathématiques dans l'histoire de ce diagramme.
