Learning communion
Laurence Hérault 1, 2
(1999)

This article reports on the learning of Eucharist by young Catholics. It is based on ethnographic observations of several ceremonies of first communion and rehearsals in France (Vendée) and Italy (Valle Stura). The analysis of the training of Eucharistic gestures and actions shows that the Catholic learning of communion does not consist of a dogmatic teaching but presents itself as an apprenticeship of the sense of the Eucharistic act. In rehearsals, we can observe the way children learn to constitute the ritual nature of bread and their own involvement in the ritual action.
