The article analyses first, the evolution of the catholic rite of communion during the XXth century in Vendée (France) in particular communion solennelle, profession de foi, fêtes de la foi. Then, it characterizes the variations of the contemporary ceremonial practice as well as their local interpretation. This double approach is based on a comparative analysis of theoretical models of performance and of observed ceremonies. It shows how the variations of the ceremonies are linked to the local conception of tradition and to the way people understand and accept the evolution of the ritual.
