Religion of tradition and post-traditional religious. This analysis begins from a disturbing convergence between an autodidactical enterprise of the reestablishment of the religious in the world of tradition (H. Hatzfeld, Les racines de la religion) and the scientific préoccupations of a sociologist who finds the element of an operational definition of modem religiosity in the ultimate reference to the authority of a tradition (D. Hervieu-Léger, La religion pour mémoire). The first step makes the wager of placing the religious at the heart of anthropological invariants which are symbolic activity, ritual and tradition. The undifferentiated assimilation of the religious in all that allows a transcendence in one form or another of the human condition tends nevertheless to « anthropologize » a very ethnocentric vision of « ultimate questions » and a conception of tradition specific to the historical religions of the Revelation. D. Hervieu-Léger pursues the exploration of « religious productions of modernity » at a distance from all traditionalist rehabilitation and discovers the weight of reference to the legitimizing authority of a ligneage of witnesses at the heart of the religious outside religion. But how can one think of a fondamental reshaping of the relationship to tradition which takes place at the heart of the modern religious while paradoxically maintaining the idea of a fondamental relationship of tradition to religion ? It seems pertinent and fruitful to use the contemporary religious as an analyser of imaginary or metaphorical modalities of the sense of fidelity to a tradition put together. However, it is difficult to understand in what way the reference to a generic unity of a mode of traditionalist legitimation, floating and contradictory, can serve as an instrument of demarcation of the religious object.

Cette analyse a pour point de départ la convergence troublante entre une entreprise autodidacte de refondation du religieux dans l'univers de la tradition (H. Hatzfeld, Les Racines de la religion) et les préoccupations scientifiques d'une sociologue qui trouve dans la référence ultime à l'autorité d'une tradition l'élément d'une définition opératoire de la religiosité moderne (D. Hervieu-Léger, La religion pour mémoire). La première démarche fait le pari d'inscrire le religieux au cœur des invariants anthropologiques que sont l'activité symbolique, le rituel et la tradition. L'assimilation indifférenciée du religieux à tout ce qui permet de transcender sous une forme ou une autre la condition humaine tend néanmoins à « anthropologiser » une vision très ethnocentriste des « questions ultimes » et une conception de la tradition propre aux religions historiques de la Révélation. C'est à distance de toute réhabilitation traditionaliste que D. Hervieu-Léger poursuit l'exploration des « productions religieuses de la modernité » et découvre au cœur du religieux hors religion le poids de la référence à l'autorité légitimatrice d'une lignée de témoins. Mais comment penser le remaniement fondamental du rapport à la tradition qui s'opère au sein du religieux moderne en maintenant paradoxalement l'idée d'un rapport fondateur de la tradition à la religion ? Autant il paraît pertinent et fécond de faire du religieux contemporain un analyseur des modalités imaginaires ou métaphoriques du sens de la fidélité à une tradition bricolée, autant il est difficile de comprendre en quoi la référence à l'unité générique d'un mode de légitimation traditionaliste, flottant et contradictoire, peut servir d'instrument de délimitation de l'objet religieux.
