La Mujamhara de Khidâsh b. Zuhayr. Introduction, traduction et notes

The Jamhara is an anthology made up of seven collections of archaic poetry, each containing seven poems. This work has been attributed to a certain Abû Zayd al-Qurashî and dated around the end of the 3rd/9th century, though it might well date back to the 4th/10th century. The first septuplet, entitled Mu‘allaqât but referred to as Sumût' in the text itself, provides a different version of the Seven odes: instead of the poems by ‘Antara b. Shaddâd and al-H'ârith b. H'illiza, we find two poems by al-Nâbigha al-Dhubyânî and al-A‘shâ Maymûn. The two poems are in turn different from those by the same authors annotated by Ibn al-Nah'h'âs (d. 338/950) in his Commentary to the Nine Famous Odes. ‘Antara's poem is nevertheless the first poem of the second septuplet of the Jamhara, entitled Mujamharât. The second Mujamhara is the poem written by ‘Abîd b. al-Abras', which was added to Ibn al-Nah'h'âs' Nine by al-Tibrîzî (d. 502/1109) in his Commentary to the Ten Odes. Out of the five other poets of the Mujamharât, the least known is certainly Khidâsh b. Zuhayr. There exist nonetheless today three editions of his poetry, one of which separated and the other two included in the poetry of his tribal group, the Banû ‘Âmir. His short (24 verses), rather obscure bipartite poem opens with a nasîb (verses 1-7), which can be interpreted as a metaphoric allusion to a love adventure. The rest of the poem (verses 7-24) constitutes the main object (gharad'). It is essentially a piece of tribal eloquence, very elliptic and allusive, though one can hear the echo of the clash between two types of solidarity, based respectively on kinship and alliance. The notes following the translation are a sign of the difficulty of interpretation of the text, for which a poetic translation has been chosen.

La Jamhara est une anthologie de la poésie archaïque de 7 x 7 poèmes. Elle est attribuée à un certain Abû Zayd al-Qurashî et datée de la fin du IIIe/IXe siècle, mais pourrait être postérieure d'un siècle. Le premier septuplet est intitulé Mu‘allaqât, mais appelé Sumût' dans le texte même. Il offre une version différente des Sept poèmes : à la place des poèmes de ‘Antara b. Shaddâd et d'al-H'ârith b. H'illiza, on trouve en effet deux poèmes d'al-Nâbigha al-Dhubyânî et d'al-A‘shâ Maymûn. Ces poèmes sont eux-mêmes différents de ceux commentés par Ibn al-Nah'h'âs (m. 338/950) dans son Commentaire des Neuf célèbres poèmes. Le poème de ‘Antara est toutefois le premier poème du second septuplet de la Jamhara, intitulé Mujamharât. La seconde Mujamhara est le poème de ‘Abîd b. al-Abras', ajouté au Neuf de Ibn al-Nah'h'âs par al-Tibrîzî (m. 502/1109) dans son Commentaire des Dix Poèmes. Des cinq autres poètes des Mujamharât, le moins connu est assurément Khidâsh b. Zuhayr. Il existe cependant aujourd'hui trois éditions de sa poésie, l'une séparée et les deux autres incluses dans celle de son groupe tribal, les Banû ‘Âmir. Son poème est bref (24 vers) et obscur. Il est bipartite. On trouve d'abord un nasîb (v. 1-7), interprétable comme une allusion métaphorique à une aventure amoureuse. Tout le reste du poème (v. 7-24), constituant l'objet principal (gharad'), est un morceau d'éloquence tribale, très elliptique et allusif, mais où l'on peut entendre l'écho de l'affrontement entre deux types de solidarités, fondées, l'une, sur la parenté et l'autre sur l'alliance. L'annotation rend compte de la difficulté de l'interprétation. On a fait le choix d'une traduction poétique.
