Cognitive Interfaces for Legal Expressions Description – Application to Copyrighted Works Online Sharing and Transactions

Legal and technical means regulate the digital dissemination of creative works. Technological protection measures and rights management information implementing copyright licenses or contracts are based on Rights Expression Languages, i.e. machine-readable ontologies that link copyright concepts and terms to events occurring on digital networks. While developing such devices, specific attention shall be dedicated users' expectations in terms of problem description and legal situations expression. In order to be interoperable and fair, Digital Rights Management systems need a common vocabulary describing legal use cases and supporting opposing interests, as well as architectural conditions enabling to describe contexts and express questions, toward a dialog between users. After a presentation of the domain legal framework and an evaluation of current standardization initiatives, we will apply the concept of cognitive interface to the conception of copyright regulation applications.
