Abstract
LABOUR IMMIGRATION AND NATION BUILDING PROCESS IN JORDAN
(1975-2002)
Nation-state is an agent exerting an influence over the volume and composition of international migratory flows. State's policies intrude on the process of individual decision-making regarding migration. The role of ‘natural', market-related laws of supply and demand in regulating migratory flows has, thus, to be put into question.
This framework is used for the study of so-called ‘labour' immigration to Jordan, since the mid-1970's. We point at the way immigration has become a tool of regime-stabilisation and construction / deconstruction of the Arab identity of Hashemite Jordan, before and after the crucial period 1988-1992. The end of the "open-door" policy and the preference given to national manpower redefine the national labour market and, thus, the borders of the Nation.

Comme le suggère I. Wallerstein, les politiques des Etats s'imposent dans la décision de migrer prise par un individu et ne laissent que peu de place aux régulations dites « naturelles », dictées par les lois du marché, de l'offre et de la demande.
Ce cadre est appliqué au phénomène de l'immigration dite « de travail » en Jordanie, depuis le milieu des années 1970. On met en relief son instrumentalisation par le régime dans le processus de stabilisation politique et de construction/déconstruction de l'identité arabe de la Jordanie hachémite, de part et d'autre de la période-charnière de 1988-1992. La fin de la politique de la « porte ouverte », l'encouragement à l'emploi de la main-d'œuvre jordanienne redéfinissent le marché du travail national et, par extension, les limites de la Nation.
