Foundations of reference and predication

In this paper written for a handbook of linguistics, I describe the foundations of the distinction between reference and predication. After a short definition, I briefly describe the history of the distinction. I then show that, despite the apparent parallelism between grammar and logic, the distinction, though it exists at both levels, is not absolutely identical. I quickly review the problem of events and describe a number of approaches of reference and predication, introducing notions from Kripke, Davidson and Frege, among others.

Dans cet article destiné à un manuel de linguistique, je décris les fondements de la distinction entre référence et prédication. Après une définition succinte, je rappelle brièvement l'histoire de la distinction, puis je montre que, malgré le parallélisme apparent entre la grammaire et la logique, la distinction, bien qu'elle existe à ces deux niveaux, n'est pas exactement identique. J'aborde rapidement le problème des événements et je décris un certain nombre d'approches des problèmes de la référence et de la prédication, introduisant les travaux de Kripke, Davidson, Frege, entre autres.
