Reference, agreement, evolving reference and the theory of mental representations

In two papers, Tasmowski-De Ryck and Verluyten discussed the possibility of reference without linguistic control (i.e., by unbound pronouns) and dismissed it on the basis of a good number of (French) examples in which there is agreement with the gender of the (absentee) noun, rather than with the actual gender of the individual refered to. In the present paper, I want to insist on the fact that though one can be dissatisfied with the solution proposed, the problems remain to this day and no theory of reference can be considered satisfying which does not address them. Thus, the papers are as important now as they were when they were first published some fifteen years ago and are likely to remain so for a long time. I will begin by giving an outline of a general theory of reference, which attempts to give a unified theory of pronouns, but which takes the alternative way, that is the pragmatic control hypothesis. I will then show how it can answer the questions raised in T-DR & V's papers and show that it can also account for a class of rather bewildering examples, generally referred to by the name of evolving reference. I will conclude with an outline of how that theory of reference should be allied to a general theory of discourse interpretation in the theoretical framework of Relevance Theory.
Dans deux articles, Tasmowski-De Ryck et Verluyten on discuté de la possibilité de la référence sans contrôle linguistique (i.e., par des pronoms non-liés) and l'ont rejeté sur la base d'un bon nombre d'exemples (en français) ou l'accord se fait sur le genre du nom (antécédent absent) plutôt que sur celui de l'individu auquel on réfère. Dans l'article présent, je veux insister sur le fait que bien que l'on puisse ne pas être convaincu par la solution proposée, le problème demeure à ce jour et qu'aucune théorie de la référence qui n'y répond pas ne peut être considérée comme satisfaisante. Ainsi, ces deux articles restent aussi importants maintenant qu'ils l'étaient lorsqu'ils furent publiés il y a quinze ans et le resteront longtemps. Je commencerai par esquisser une théorie générale de la référence, qui essaie de livrer une théorie unifiée des pronoms, mais qui prend la voie alternative, c'est-à-dire l'hypothèse du contrôle pragmatique. Je montrerai alors comment on peut répondre aux questions soulevées dans les articles de T-DR & V et que cette façon de faire permet aussi de rendre compte d'une classe d'exemples surprenants, généralement connus sous le nom de référence évolutive. Je conclurai par un sketch de la façon dont cette théorie de la référence doit être alliée à une théorie générale de l'interprétation du discours dans le cadre de la Théorie de la Pertinence.
