Résumé

Traditionally, the notions of coherence and anaphora are linked. Numerous works in functional grammar have had the goal of showing that anaphora is, so to speak, a linguistic marker of coherence. The problem, recently identified, of evolving reference, seems to verify this claim. Such examples suggest a seductive hypothesis according to which the identity of the referent along the referential chain is an illusion, an interpretive effect produced by discourse coherence.
However other examples falsify the hypothesus of a strong link between anaphora and coherence. There is a type of corpus which might shed some light over the actual links between anaphora and coherence : those are texts produced by linguistically able autistic people. Such texts often present a weird organisation of referential chains as well as a fairly strong incoherence, i.e., a deficit in both coherence and anaphora. Dr Happé, a specialist of autism, gives the following comment over such texts : they are often ‘difficult to follow, possibly in a significant way : there are for instance changes of themes which are not obvious for the reader'. Given that the dominant hypothesis on autism at the present time is a deficit in the recognition of other people's states of mind, the link, both with anaphora and coherence is important.
In the present paper, I will defend the hypothesis, relying on examples from texts by both normal and autistic people that neither anaphora nor coherence are autonomous or primitive notions, but that they are rather the result — and the linguistic effects in anaphora — or the speaker's management of what is mutually manifest.
