There has been a proliferation of references to the notion of territory. Its use in the field of spatial planning requires a semantic reframing to reduce the risk of political manipulation of the concept. Each territory is presented as an open system, establishing its coherence and singularity in a particular and significant combination of natural and societal, organizational and symbolic components. This geographical arrangement, specific and recognized, which establishes a territory, is subject to change. Especially because it interacts with other territories, at upper and lower scale levels. A limited inventory of forms of interaction and evolutionary processes can then be established.
