Heloise's literary self-fashioning and the Epistolae duorum amantium

This disccusion of the case of Heloise, within an interdisciplinary symposium on memory, was also the occasion to provide new arguments in favour of the ascription to Heloise and Abelard of the anonymous Epistolae duorum amantiun. The overall argument is divided in five successive points.
1. The discussion of a recent article by Jacques Dalarun shows that too much weight has been given to the cod. Troyes 802. The Correspondence of Heloise and Abelard was indeed « edited » in Paris in the XIIIth Cent, but this edition didn't include the Rule for the Paraclete. Dalarun's arguments in favour of an editorial intervention by Abelard on the Correspondence are also rejected.
2. A series of clues shows that the « speech against marriage » incorporated by Abelard in the Historia Calamitatum was based on an actual letter written by Heloise, that Abelard copied, but also drastically abbreviated.
3. A presentation of the debate concerning the Epistolae duorum amantium shows that the arguments in favour of the ascription presented by Constant Mews and others have not been successfully disproved yet.
4 and 5 : A new line of argumentation in favour of the ascription is based on a comparison between Heloise's moral philosophy of love, and that of the woman of the EDA. The most striking fact are the presence, in both cases, of an unusual identification with tragic heroines of latin literature, while an allusion to the rejection of marriage can be found in the EDA (letter M 79).
